Understanding the Gap Year Effect
The most important — and most fixable — barrier on this page. When students skip a year between concentrator and capstone courses, completion rates drop dramatically, and scheduling the capstone the very next year is a lever the district controls. Below: which grades are skipped, which pathways are most affected, and what happens after a gap.
Both figures are shares of the same students: everyone who reached concentrator, counted once.

Capstone Scheduling Conflicts: Blocking Singletons
A capstone offered in only one period (a singleton) can lock students out: if that period is taken, the pathway cannot be finished at that school. Shown here are only the singleton capstones with concentrators stuck behind them — students who finished the first two courses and have no capstone on their transcript. A conflict does not prove causation, but these are the rooms to check.
